Sometimes called accessory-dwelling-units (ADUs)  also, known as granny flats, mother-in-law apartments or backyard cottages. Typically, an ADU is attached to the main structure while a backyard cottage sometimes called a DADU is a self-contained detached structure.  Both concepts provide the homeowners with flexible housing options ways to augment their revenue streams.  To be an official ADU it must have its own separate entrance and meet certain code .requirments.

  • Can promote economic diversity in neighborhoods that might be outside the range of average-income earners
