Typically, an ADU is attached to the main structure while a backyard cottage sometimes called a DADU is a self-contained detached structure.  Both concepts provide the homeowners with flexible housing options ways to augment their revenue streams.  To be an official ADU it must have its own separate entrance and meet certain code .requirments.
